Embracing Imperfection In This “Picture-Perfect” Age

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the fact that things like this blog, magazines, and even Instagram feeds have fooled us all into thinking that our homes and everyday routines have to be perfectly styled and pristine. Enough is enough already! It’s time to let go of the notion that life has to look constantly picture-perfect.

Now, of course, I’m 100 percent fully aware that my saying that is a little hypocritical since the concept of “pretty” is my philosophy with just about everything (okay, really, everything) I share here on the blog, but that’s only because I’m sure you guys don’t want to actually look at laundry piled on the floor or crumpled potato chip bags lying on the coffee table. Believe me. It’s all there behind the scenes.

I recently ordered this Calm book from The School of Life and BRIKA and have been doing my best to really be intentional about the sense of peace I welcome into my life on a day to day basis. I don’t want to fixate on the placement of pillows on our living room couch until they’re just so, and I wish that I didn’t always feel so dejected over how dark our window-less hallway looks.

Although my type A personality will probably always push me towards perfection no matter how many “self help” type books I read, I want to try harder to see the beauty in common moments. I want to be able to see those crooked pillows and smile as I remember lounging there with a good book earlier in the day. I want to be able to walk down our hallway and cherish every footstep because our house (from the windowless sections to the bright spots) is truly our dream home.

Anyway, I just wanted to challenge all of you to think about letting go of pressure to make your homes and lives as picture-perfect as mainstream media has led you to believe they need to be. Life is anything but perfect. The beauty is really in those goofy, crooked, candid, messy moments when you completely forget about the way something looks and revel in just how it feels.

I hope you take today, this season, or even the entire year to refocus your energy on embracing imperfection and appreciating a pretty image rather than taking it as your own personal challenge to follow suit. After all, life sure is beautiful—unmade bed, dirty dishes, bare feet, and all.

At-Home Exercises To Relieve Wrist Pain

At-Home Exercises To Relieve Wrist Pain | Dream Green DIY

Just like anyone else who works in front of a computer every day, I suffer from chronic wrist pain. While I don’t spend all day long tapping away on a keyboard, I do tend to clock at least a few hours every day at my desk in the office. So it’s not really surprising that my wrists suffer.

This is probably TMI, but I’ve actually developed a cyst in my left wrist that makes things like long hours at the keyboard a struggle. It’s especially aggravated whenever I do heavy lifting, and has made yoga (namely any positions that put weight on my wrists) pretty excrutiating. The good news is that it hasn’t started to press on any nerves in my hand yet, which would necessitate surgery, so it’s just something I have to be careful with.

At my annual check up, I made it a point to ask my doctor for strategies to improve the strength of my wrist, and she had a few tips and tricks to share. Happily, the simple exercises she explained to me that day in her office are all things we can do in our own offices while carrying out normal day-to-day tasks. Scroll on for three step-by-step at-home exercises that will help improve wrist strength and reduce the effects of wrist tendinitis.

Exercise 1

  1. Rest your forearm comfortably on your knee or a table with your affected wrist and hand extended out, palm down.
  2. Slowly bend upward at the wrist and allow your hand to close into a fist, then lower your hand and relax your fingers so that they point downward. Hold the two final positions for roughly 6 seconds each.
  3. Repeat 7 to 10 times.

Exercise 2

  1. Sit in a comfortable position, and extend your affected wrist and hand, palm down, beyond your thigh.
  2. With your forearm held in place on your thigh, rotate your wrist so that your palm faces up. Rotate just your wrist so that the palm now faces down. Alternate these two positions—palm up and palm down—while leaving your forearm planted solidly on your thigh. Hold the two final positions for roughly 6 seconds each.
  3. Repeat 7 to 10 times.

Exercise 3

  1. Sit in a comfortable position, and extend your affected wrist and hand, palm down, beyond your thigh.
  2. Slowly bend back and forth as far as you can at the wrist. Hold the two final positions for roughly 6 seconds each.
  3. Repeat 7 to 10 times.

Slowly start incorporating these types of wrist flexion and extension practices into your daily routine, and ease off of them if you start to experience more pain. While these exercises have certainly allowed me to find relief from my pain, you’ll want to consult a licensed practitioner for best practices when it comes to your own wrists and body.
