I love colored front doors. Mustard yellow, fire engine red, rich navy – These colors absolutely beckon visitors through the threshold. But alas…We live in a townhouse, and have zero room for creativity with our black painted front door (an exact replica of our neighbor’s). But then I found my loop hole…Painting the INSIDE of the front door!

Although theoretically it does seem to work more to welcome people back OUT the door, having that extra wash of color would add another irresistible layer of pizazz to our home.

I began the project by first cleaning and then priming the white door with a can of Kilz 2 that we already had on hand. I thought that the original door color would be a TINY bit different than the primer shade, but it was literally that white – the most standard, ACHING-to-be covered shade of white.

As for the top coat, I knew I wanted to go with yellow. I thought a shade of blue or teal might be a little TOO much, but yellow seemed like a very tame upgrade from white. The specifics? I debated between the two colors of yellow in our stencil feature wall (seen in the background of the photo below). Ultimately, I went with the lighter yellow – Olympic’s “Cornmeal.”

For less than $15 and only about a combined hour of work, I was able to completely transform the feeling of our entry. Admittedly the new color was a little jarring for me at first, but I have given it a week and now can’t live without it.

The best part is how it makes sense of the color palette throughout the rest of the space. It pulls the yellow from the stencil feature wall (that’s a given), but also from the pillows and fabric in the seating of the living room just a few yards away.

(Yes, I STILL need to finish the bottom part of the stencil…Oops!)

So, a little over a week later and the only regret that I have is that I waited so long! Have you guys painted your front door? Inside or out?
