I love colored front doors. Mustard yellow, fire engine red, rich navy – These colors absolutely beckon visitors through the threshold. But alas…We live in a townhouse, and have zero room for creativity with our black painted front door (an exact replica of our neighbor’s). But then I found my loop hole…Painting the INSIDE of the front door!

Although theoretically it does seem to work more to welcome people back OUT the door, having that extra wash of color would add another irresistible layer of pizazz to our home.
I began the project by first cleaning and then priming the white door with a can of Kilz 2 that we already had on hand. I thought that the original door color would be a TINY bit different than the primer shade, but it was literally that white – the most standard, ACHING-to-be covered shade of white.
As for the top coat, I knew I wanted to go with yellow. I thought a shade of blue or teal might be a little TOO much, but yellow seemed like a very tame upgrade from white. The specifics? I debated between the two colors of yellow in our stencil feature wall (seen in the background of the photo below). Ultimately, I went with the lighter yellow – Olympic’s “Cornmeal.”
For less than $15 and only about a combined hour of work, I was able to completely transform the feeling of our entry. Admittedly the new color was a little jarring for me at first, but I have given it a week and now can’t live without it.
The best part is how it makes sense of the color palette throughout the rest of the space. It pulls the yellow from the stencil feature wall (that’s a given), but also from the pillows and fabric in the seating of the living room just a few yards away.
(Yes, I STILL need to finish the bottom part of the stencil…Oops!)
So, a little over a week later and the only regret that I have is that I waited so long! Have you guys painted your front door? Inside or out?
I’ve debated painting the inside of our front door (can’t paint the outside since it’s an apartment). I was hoping you’d go with the brighter yellow with yours though! The one you chose looks nice, too, of course. I love all your Monday Pinspiration projects, I think it’s an awesome feature, so keep up the good work!
I MAY end up brightening the color eventually, but I’m taking baby steps to ease into it 🙂 Glad you like it!!
Hah, I know what you mean, I say I was hoping you’d choose the brighter color but really, when it comes to my own projects I’m afraid of bolder colors and I have to talk myself into them.
It’s a fun challenge to talk ourselves into taking those leaps of faith 🙂
WOW!!!!! This looks incredible! It’s so warm and it really does add a little extra pizzazz to your entry way! But…I think the detail I love the most is the basket of wine glasses on the bar cart. I never would have thought to do that, but it just looks so finished (in the best possible of ways)! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks!!! I love your enthusiasm, and that you picked out the basket on the bar cart 🙂
I think your new colored door looks great – and you’ll never have to worry about weather damage!
Thanks!! Glad you like it 🙂
I have the same problem!! Our townhouse has issued orange front doors. The inside is white and I’ve tossed around the idea of painting it another colour or painting the garage door or basement door. The colour you picked is perfect for your space – it looks great with the other dashes of yellow. Great choice!
I say go for it!! You can always paint it back if it doesn’t look right – At least that’s what I kept telling myself…And thank you!! So happy to hear you think it works well for us =)
Oh I love how that turned out! I never would have thought to paint the inside door! So pretty…you did great work!

Thank you thank you!!!
