Creating A Colorful Office Seating Nook

Creating A Colorful Office Seating Nook

Truth be told, I don’t think that I would ever feel totally comfortable living in a large house. There’s something so special about a small home with individual rooms (open concept just isn’t for me!) and petite square footage within each space. It feels extra cozy to live in these types of rooms day after day, and this lifestyle also forces me to tap into my creativity when it comes to space planning and furniture sourcing. Case in point: my tiny home office. I really wanted to come up with a way to add a little bit more seating to the room for those times when I needed to have John come in and take a look at something on my computer (read: taxes).

The room is about 10 by 10 feet square, so I didn’t have room to add another full-size chair, and I actually didn’t really want to go that route. A large piece of furniture can’t be moved at will, which was my vision for the little seat that I had in mind. After giving it some thought, I decided to add an easily moveable upholstered cube to the small space between the door into the room and the folding closet doors on the other side.

I opted for the Jae Cube Stool from Joon Loloi for this update, and love how it turned out. It’s the perfect size to fit in the spot I had planned for it, and I really like the sleek linear fabric design. It looks modern and adds just the right amount of functionality to the space without overwhelming it. I’m also happy to report that John was, in fact, able to easily pull the cube up to my computer so we could go over taxes together back in March.

To make the cube look just a little more intentional and less like a random floating piece of furniture, I did a couple of things. First, I hung colorful pieces of art in a gallery wall formation just above the cube. This helped fill the space with a bit more personality since the cube is definitely on the more neutral side in terms of design, and this also added visual height to the cube, which is, of course, backless. Then, I added a taller plant in a floor basket to give the arrangement even more height and more color, of course.

I’m so happy with how this setup turned out, both from a design standpoint and functionally. The cats also really enjoy using it as a pet bed when I’m working away on my computer so we can all be together during the day. Sometimes I even find myself plopping down on the cube when I’m getting ready in the morning to put on my shoes since my home office is just outside our hall bathroom and main bedroom.

Shop the cube here on the Joon Loloi website in case you’re interested in adding something like this to your own small space, or if you’re in need of a stylish ottoman for your larger home! It’s a really versatile piece that I see making the rounds all throughout our home in the coming years.
