Memorial Day Patio Styling Inspiration

Memorial Day is just around the corner, bringing the unofficial kick-off to summer with it! Are you ready to host your friends and family for a fun outdoor soirée? Now that we finally have a patio of our own to use (more on that coming soon—I promise), I wanted to share some fun styling inspiration in honor of the upcoming holiday. I teamed up with YITAHOME for this setup, and used their 6 -piece woven rattan sectional sofa set as a centerpiece for the look. It comes with a loveseat sofa, ottoman, and coffee table, so you basically have an entire party-ready lounge space straight out of the box—and it’s under $325 for the full kit! Keep scrolling to see lots more photos, plus read my list of six tips for getting the look ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day Patio Styling Inspiration:

1. Start with foundation outdoor furniture. Decide what’s most important to you and your family based on how you enjoy Memorial Day. Do you like to lounge in a comfortable spot for hours on end? Choose a spacious sofa setup that can fit multiple people. Or if dining is more important, then prioritize a dining set. Once you have your foundation furniture decided on and ordered, you can fill in with other décor from there.

2. No matter what kind of foundation furniture you choose, just know that you’re going to need ample tabletop space for cell phones, holiday drinks, snacks, and dinner plates. The coffee table that came with our sofa set will serve as our main tabletop drop zone, but we also incorporated some drum side tables to act as supplemental table space.

3. As much as we love our new DIY hardscape patio, the stones do have a tendency to get pretty hot thanks to sunshine late in the day. So, we made sure to have some of the patio covered with a soft outdoor rug, that way our family has a cool place to rest their toes as needed.

4. Throw pillows are a must if you want your Memorial Day party guests to feel like they can cozy up for the long haul. We used outdoor pillows in a variety of coordinating patterns and colors to make the outdoor living space look extra inviting and cohesive.

5. Don’t forget to consider lighting! Your Memorial Day party may end up lasting well into the evening, even outlasting that early “summer” sun, so make sure you have outdoor lamps charged and ready to go. We now keep a couple of outdoor lanterns in the corner of the patio for just this reason, and also have some portable lights stored inside that we can bring out if the after-dark mood is just right.

6. Our outdoor patio didn’t feel complete until I added potted plants to finish off the look. I love how our new frilly palm tree looks sitting between the sofa and lounge chair zones, and I also added a vintage tiered plant stand for even more greenery exhibition opportunities. A couple of succulent arrangements on the coffee table finished off the arrangement perfectly.

I’ll be sharing lots more about our DIY hardscape patio in the coming weeks, including a full installation tutorial, but I’m so excited to offer this first sneak peek in honor of Memorial Day. This holiday is one that I’ve been especially looking forward to for a number of reasons, and having this beautiful, relaxing space where we can host family honestly feels like a dream come true. Shop our outdoor sofa/coffee table set here, and if you have your own outdoor holiday hosting tips to share, please tell us all about them in the comments! One last thing I’ll say is that you can never have enough trays for schlepping food and drinks back and forth between the kitchen and outdoor scene. Wishing you and yours and amazing kick-off to summer…

Did You Know I Wrote A Décor Book?

The DGD Décor eBook Is Now Available

I get asked almost weekly over on my Instagram if I offer in-home or virtual home décor styling services, and the truth is that I actually don’t. I often wonder if I should add interior design to my business lineup because of the interest I get, but that just isn’t on-brand for me. I started my business 14 years ago with the mission of teaching homeowners how to do their own decorating and styling because I truly believe that anyone can do it with the right support and some good old fashioned trial and error. I’m a self-taught designer myself, and find so much satisfaction in learning as I go when it comes to room makeovers. I’m proud of what we’ve done with our home on our very meager décor budget, and my goal as an entrepreneur is to teach fellow homebodies how to achieve that level of satisfaction themselves. Which is why I wrote a book that explains exactly how to do that!

My blog, of course, serves as a place for sharing weekly DIY home how-to guides, but I dreamt of writing a more comprehensive and focused book that explained my detailed process for designing a home. So, between 2021 and 2022, I spent five months writing and perfecting Your DIY Guide To Home Decorating, and ultimately self-published it in April of that latter year. My 60-page ebook is packed with information that I’ve picked up over the past two decades of being a homemaker, including how I start a room makeover (arguably the hardest part!), my favorite shopping resources for furniture and accessories, tips for picking out vintage finds for your spaces, my styling process broken down into four steps, plus exclusive DIY craft tutorials that will add personal flair to your home.

By the way, you’ll receive a digital copy of the book with your purchase that can be read easily on your phone, tablet, or laptop, or you can choose to print the book, like I did. For those asking about the printed copy I’ve shown in photos on Instagram and here on the blog, I special-ordered mine online. Click here for the website I used (please use the honor system, though, and only print one!). Or you can just print your physical copy from your computer.

I’m so proud of this book, and truly feel like it’s a great starting point for those of you who don’t know how to go about decorating your home. It’s definitely bad for my business to say this, but you really don’t need to hire me or anyone else to do it for you. You just need to trust yourself and your own creativity. I feel so strongly that you’ve got what it takes to create your dream living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom—whatever it may be!

That said, I totally understand feeling a little lost and overwhelmed before kicking off a project, which is why I wrote my guide book. I wanted to help fellow wannabe DIY decorators feel less alone, and kick start their ideation so that a room makeover feels less stressful and far more fun. That’s how it should be, after all. Decorating a home is such a privilege and it deserves to be something that you relish and enjoy. If you want to test your skills, start here, and don’t forget to come back to this blog post from time to time to share updates with us in the comments section.

P.S. In honor of today’s post, I’m running a 25% off sale. Click here to take advantage of the discounted pricing. Still not sure? See a sneak peek here, including a breakdown of what you can expect from the book and read reviews from a handful of my fellow home décor influencers on Instagram.
