Pinspiration Monday: Rustic Magazine Holder

Just to give you all fair warning…I have been feeling a little under the weather the last week and a half, so I apologize if the blog is slightly lackluster for the next few days. Although my energy level for actually DOING projects hasn’t been up to par as of late, I never stop planning. So this week’s posts may focus a little more on what WILL be rather than what has BEEN, but I hope you are just as inspired despite not seeing the usual amount of finished products. I’d wager a guess that the lull won’t last more than a week or two.

Now that that little disclaimer is out of the way, I wanted to share one update that DID happen despite the major project hold. After recently coming across the pin below, it made me pause. I recognized that old, rustic wooden box…But from where??

And then it hit me. My parents have had this old, dilapidated wooden box for as long as I can remember. I don’t recall what exactly it was used for in my childhood, but I know that it was out in the open for years and years. As soon as the memory struck, I made a mental note to ask my mom about it the next time I was over at their place. Lo and behold, they STILL had it – Although it had been living in a sawdusty corner downstairs in my dad’s woodworking shop.

After gaining permission to confiscate it, I dutifully dumped out the wood scraps, packed it in the trunk of the car and brought it home to our house.

Oh, and don’t mind that long line of dried wood glue. I’m hoping to get that sucker sanded down or scraped off as soon as I find the time. That aside, isn’t it fabulous? Faded original paint, exposed nails, aged wood – It’s a rustic lover’s dream come true. And it was free!

As for its purpose, I took a cue from my “Pinspiration” image and filled it up with my magazine collection. I’ve got back issues of Real Simple, Elle Decor, a couple of art magazines and a stack of random wedding mags from last year’s planning spree. Time to get them organized and stored away in one spot.

I had initially planned on packing them in right side up like the Pinterest image, but the box was a little too high and would have covered the spines and issue dates. Instead, I laid them on their backs so that I could lift the top of the box, look down and see all of the titles and dates in one calculated glance – No tugging, pulling or separating needed.

I’m so thankful to have them all in one spot now. Before, my collection was scattered throughout the house with no real pattern, rhyme or reason in play. The OCD-prone and organization addict in me is finally satisfied with this stylish new system.

How do you guys store your magazines? Are you a fan of rustic wood? I think there is something to be said about balance when it comes to rustic – You’re not going to see me dragging in old palette wood to build floor to ceiling bookshelves anytime soon, but I think a little goes a long way towards adding warmth to any space.
