Teasing A New Look For Our Living Room

Teasing A New Look For Our Living Room

Now, I think I can guess what you’re thinking. “She’s redesigning her living room again?!” It probably does seem like I do this every three months, and even though I’m perfectly fine leaning on the excuse that it’s technically just another day at the office for me since it’s my job to talk about DIY home décor, the truth is that I’d be doing it just as often, whether it was for work or not.

My mom can attest to the fact that, even as a kid, I was always changing things up in my room. We used to joke that my teenage bedroom ended up a couple of millimeters smaller thanks to the multiple layers of paint I coated the room with. Now, as an adult, it’s still very natural for me to crave freshness when it comes to décor. So, yup! I am redesigning my living room yet again, and I can’t wait to take you guys along for the ride.

Even though my reasoning is realistically 50 percent “just ’cause I feel like it,” there are still a few practical reasons for justifying changes to the space. The main one being that, since we added a new Frame TV to the living room, our current seating just wasn’t quite cutting it. We had become so used to the setup of an extra large sectional sofa and television in our downstairs family room, that we decided to figure out how to incorporate a similarly proportioned sectional in our upstairs TV zone, too. Plus, with my parents now living only a few miles away, we’re entertaining more than ever.

So, with the thought of extra seating thanks to a hypothetical new sectional bouncing around in my brain, I started thinking about a new color palette and new art to go along with it, plus a few new throw pillows, too…Essentially it snowballed from there, and turned into the mood board you see above.

As you probably know by now if you’ve been following along for any length of time, I always start any new design project with a mood board. It’s the easiest way for me to hone in on my favorite color scheme, furniture options, and texture combinations. Since I’m always working on a meager budget, this process also allows me to visually place stand-ins for the vintage furniture, art, lighting, and accessories that we already own so I can get a sense of how the select new items could look alongside our existing collection.

So far we’ve decided to center the entire living room around a brand new Article Sven Sectional Sofa (we chose their Briar Gray fabric option after looking at swatches), a few new pieces of art, and one or two new throw pillows—note that we’re using new pillow covers to go over some older pillows we already have to cut down on waste and to save a bit of money. The rest of the space will be brought to life by rearranging lighting that we already have, real and faux greenery, and I even plan to work in a couple pieces of DGD Pottery for a little extra character.

The design is really starting to come together behind the scenes and I can’t wait to share sneak peeks with you next week before the big reveal mid-month. Who’s excited?! Thanks, as always, for following along, and I’d love for you to tell me in the comments if you’re a serial home décor refresher, too.
