I’m “Modern Simplicity” | What are you?

I’m the kind of gal who just loves personal revelations. For example, I recently realized that I’m a TERRIBLE story teller (this blog is actually just a front for my inability to string spoken words together) and that I tend to naturally shy away from situations that I’ve never been in before. Therefore, it should come as no surprise whatsoever that I’m a sucker for diagnostic designer labels—things like “Hollywood Glam,” “Regal Regency,” “Eclectic Mid-Century.”

So when Sauder Woodworking Co. asked me to choose an esthetic that best fit my personal tenancies, you better believe I was enthused. It came down to three options: Modern Simplicity, Urban Classic and Vintage Eclectic. Let’s examine the evidence…

For me and our home, I’d have to say that it’s all about Modern Simplicity. Inspired by my favorite 1960’s décor, this style denounces fussy, ornamental shapes in lieu of clean edges and parred down styling. Here are my tips for achieving the look of “Modern Simplicity” in your own space:

  1. Ditch the preconception that simple has to be under whelming. By removing unnecessary accessories and focusing your color palette on just one or two colors, it will actually enhance, rather than take away, from the rest of your lovely space.
  2. My favorite thing to do when restyling a room is to shop my home. Sometimes all it takes to add a bit of modern flair to a space is pulling pillows from the bedroom to use at the dining table or repurposing a white flower pot from the garden as utensil storage in the kitchen.
  3. Focus on combining textures and patterns that you likely already have floating around—solid colored linens, striped pillows or drapes, geometric patterned dishware and abstract art. These all naturally read “modern” thanks to throwback vibes already well established in the trend world.

Happily, none of those tricks will cost you a dime! For when we DO have money in the jar though, I’m already dreaming about special new pieces to add—things that will replace some of the more worn hand-me-downs still floating listlessly from room to room. Here are some of my top Sauder must-haves.

The best part? Only ONE of those pieces breaks the $300 mark. The lowest price point is—get this—less than $50. Yeah. My mind is a little blown, too. For more Sauder furniture eye candy, be sure to click through to Pinterest.

Before I go, I just have to ask…Which style interpretation do YOU identify with? Are you Modern Simplicity as well? Or maybe you lean more towards an Urban Classic vibe. But then again…Vintage Eclectic could be calling your name! Tell me your favorite in the comments, and then share what that style means to you.
