This post is part of the 10-minute projects series started by Laura Putnam, of Finding Home Farms, in which eight bloggers tackle a different themed 10-minute project each month. Click the links at the end of the post to visit the other bloggers who are part of the series to see how they spent their 10 minutes. This month, we’re tackling 10-minute no-bake dessert ideas.

Truth be told, I’m not very big on desserts. I’m more of a salty snack person, so my favorite sweet treats tend to be those that combine a little hint of savory goodness. So, white chocolate dipped pretzels are basically right up there with Christmas for me. In other words, GIMME GIMME! This recipe is nothing new, of course, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s simple, quick, and can be thrown together using pantry items that you probably already have on-hand. I decided to take things to the next level by making my pretzel rods double-sided—one end covered with rainbow sprinkles and the other with pink and white ones. Yes ma’am (or sir!), things definitely got a little bit wild and crazy here in the DGD studio…Read on for the 10-minute recipe!

  • Large plain pretzel rods
  • 1 cup white chocolate morsels
  • 3/4 teaspoon Crisco butter-flavored shortening
  • Sprinkles
  • Small tasting glass or shot glass
  • Chilled marble platter

Directions

Fill the tasting glass halfway with white chocolate morsels, and add in 3/4 teaspoon Crisco butter-flavored shortening. You won’t start by dumping the full cup of morsels in as you’ll need to heat them slowly. Place the tasting glass in the microwave and heat it for 20 seconds. Stir the morsels and shortening in the glass for about 30 seconds to help the melting process along, and then place the glass back in the microwave. Heat for another 20 seconds, remove the glass, and stir the mixture again until fully incorporated and melted.

Drop another handful of morsels into the glass, stir to combine, and place the glass back in the microwave, heating it for 20 seconds. Remove the glass and stir to combine. Continue adding morsels, stirring the mixture, and heating it in the microwave in 20-second intervals until all of the chocolate morsels are melted. Note that you may need to use an oven mitt to handle the glass as it will be hot. And, of course, you can complete this entire step using a double boiler if you prefer that method—it’s up to you.

While the chocolate is still hot, dip one end of a pretzel rod down into the glass until it hits the bottom. Lift the pretzel slowly out of the glass, flip it, and dip the other end into the glass. Set it aside on a chilled marble platter so that the chocolate has a chance to harden or set. Repeat the steps across all of the pretzels until you run out of chocolate. Work relatively quickly as you won’t want the chocolate to fully set before completing the last step.

To finish, drop a pinch of colored sprinkles over the chocolate-dipped ends of the pretzel rods. As long as the chocolate is still a bit warm, the sprinkles should stick to the pretzels without trouble. Place the platter of pretzels in the refrigerator to allow the chocolate to fully harden, and then enjoy them for about a week.

If you end up with a little bit of leftover chocolate and are able to move fast enough, try placing a number of plain pretzels edge-to-edge on a platter or in a Tupperware, and then reheat the chocolate in the tasting glass back to a gooey texture. Tip the glass over the pretzels and allow the chocolate to drizzle out all over them. Use a spoon to help the chocolate along if needed, and then add the sprinkles on top. Allow the pretzels to set in the fridge for a couple of hours before serving.

We’ve been snacking on these all week, and they’ve been such a treat to look forward to. They also make for excellent gifts. Just pop them into a clear cellophane gift bag and tie them with a bow. Add a paper gift tag to the ribbon and you’re done. I, for one, couldn’t think of a happier little surprise.
